1983 - 1989 - Growing into my own

When you look back on life you see how simple things were. From 11 to 14 I lived in the community of Athens, MS and attended school at Hatley.

Nothing special happened until July 12, 1987 when I made my first attempt to get my Mississippi Drivers License. I failed the first time because I did what we call a "country stop" with the instructor in the car. A country stop is when you slow down, look both ways and roll thru the stop sign. I failed again a few days later when the car I was testing in had a bulb blown in the parking lights. They say the third time is a charm and its was, cause I finally got my license.

Having a license opens up new avenues, especially for a country boy. I drove all over the place. I can even remember one day in the summer that I got my license, taking my mom to work, and driving all the way to Birmingham (115 miles from home.) I almost didnt get back in time to get her from work.

In April 1988, on Railroad Festival weekend, I told my mother I was staying with some friends after the festival. We had planned to drink and party all night but I couldn't tell her that. About 1am, a group of us were standing on a street near downtown and one of the guys with us, unbeknowingst to the rest of the group had gone into a nearby yard and was taking a part of the person's car (He wanted to use it on a a car he was rebuilding.) The person heard him in the yard and called the police. The guy ran out of the yard screaming run, and of course we did. We ran around the block and climbed into the back of a dump truck. For about 45 min we watched blue lights going around the block, until they say one on the guys in our group, too drunk to get into the truck, he had hidden between the wheels. We were taken to the station, and the officer on duty knew my stepfather, so instead of putting me in a cell, he called him, and my parents came to get me. No charges were filed agaisnt me, and there is no record, but I learned a good lesson about being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
In early 1989, I attended my Junior Prom with a girl named Vicki. We went as friends cause she wanted to go and I didn't want to go without a date. We had a good time. I wonder how Vicki is sometimes as I havent heard from her since high school.
